How Distractions Can Help Authors

Today we welcome author, Lawrence Boarer-Pitchford to the site as he explains his writing process, inspiration, and how distractions sometimes help him in the writing process.

What inspires you as an author?

During my day I’m inspired by lots of things: Music, television shows, images I see, books I read.

But, if your question is, what inspires my writing? I’d have to say solitude. Solitude is when I get into my head, and the purity of imagination is unleashed onto a page.

What is your writing process?

I think my writing process is like most authors.

First comes the brainstorm – where the raw concept is formed.

Next is the development phase where I form the idea into a coherent story – loosely in three acts.

Then comes the refinement phase where I do continuous editing.

After, I reach out to my beta readers for their input and thoughts.

Next, I send my work to be professionally edited.

I get back my editor’s edits and go through the manuscript again.

I solicit or make the cover art.

And lastly, I format and publish my work out to a distributor such as Amazon, D2D, or Smashwords.

How do you deal with distractions?

I embrace distractions. For me, I’ve found that distractions help break up my brutal time at the keyboard. I get up and do some chores, I’m asked to do some tasks around the house, my cats demand some affection. Then, when I sit back down, I’m less bound up with the story, and I can write more freely.

Who is your biggest supporter?

My wife, sister, general family, friends like my pal Gary, you – KN Lee

What tool has made your writing and publishing process easier?

Recently, the Draft2Digital system for formatting and publishing books is much better than the tools and Amazon KDP that I’ve used in the past.

What is your advice to new authors?

Attend writers conventions and look for writers groups in your area. Visit the Absolute Write website. Lastly, always use a professional editor.
